Oliver Barrett IV (Ryan O'Neal), a member of a wealthy and prestigious family, follows in the footsteps of his ancestors by attending Harvard Law School. One day, he falls in love with Jennifer Cavalleri (Ali MacGraw), a working-class music student at Radcliffe College. Despite their different backgrounds, the couple decides to get married. However, Oliver's father, Oliver Barrett III (Ray Milland), disapproves of their union and threatens to cut off his financial support and inheritance. Without his father's financial assistance, continuing his studies at Harvard becomes extremely challenging for Oliver. The newlywed couple is forced to start from scratch and take on various jobs to cover Oliver's tuition fees. Meanwhile, they desperately want to have a child, but Jennifer learns that she is unable to conceive due to her leukemia diagnosis.
