Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who lives with his mother in a small town after his parents' divorce, is a withdrawn and antisocial child. He is also bullied at school. One day, a girl named Abby (Chloe Moretz) and an old man (Richard Jenkins) move into the apartment next door. Owen soon befriends Abby, who is the same age as him. Meanwhile, strange murders start happening in the town. Owen and Abby develop a strong emotional bond as they spend time together every day. However, Owen soon discovers a horrifying truth about Abby - she is a vampire who needs blood to survive. Despite this revelation, Owen realizes that he loves Abby deeply and questions his own feelings.
