Kyra Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer), who is divorced from her husband, moves into her elderly mother's house in Brooklyn. Middle-aged Kyra tries to find a job and stand on her own feet. However, she is devastated by her mother's sudden death and finds herself without any emotional or financial support. With no good options left, Kyra starts a relationship with her understanding neighbor (Kiefer Sutherland), who is dealing with his own troubles. But she refuses to accept the upheaval in her once smooth life and resorts to increasingly dangerous paths to hold onto what little she has left.
