Robin Hood (Kevin Costner), along with King Richard the Lionheart, participates in the Crusades and is captured during the expedition, imprisoned in a dungeon in Jerusalem. Upon learning that he is to be executed, Robin prepares an escape plan and saves the life of a Muslim prisoner named Azeem (Morgan Freeman) while fleeing. Azeem, indebted to Robin for saving his life, vows to never leave his side and they return to England together.

However, upon Robin's return to England, he finds his magnificent Locksley Castle in ruins. His father, Lord Locksley, has been executed by the Sheriff of Nottingham on accusations of worshiping the devil. Meanwhile, Robin encounters Duncan, a servant who survived but was blinded during the torture. Duncan tells Robin stories about the Sheriff of Nottingham and his witch. Meanwhile, the Sheriff's men are after Robin in Locksley's lands.

In light of these events, Robin, Azeem, and Duncan leave Locksley's lands. Robin plans to seek refuge with Marian, the cousin of the King. He is immediately captivated by her. However, the Sheriff of Nottingham is also determined to keep Marian under his watchful eye. Robin goes to the Bishop to learn the truth about his father and confronts the Sheriff of Nottingham in the process. While escaping Nottingham's soldiers, Robin and his companions take refuge in Sherwood Forest, a place surrounded by hundreds of sinister legends. It is there that Locksley becomes known as Robin Hood.
