"The Kite Runner", Afghan author Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel, tells the story of Amir, an Afghan immigrant living in California, who returns to his homeland under Taliban rule to help his childhood friend Hassan's son, who is in trouble.

Amir, living in California, is the son of a wealthy merchant family from Kabul who migrated to America after the arrival of the Taliban regime. During his childhood years in Kabul, he formed a strong friendship with Hassan, the son of the family's servant. However, during a kite-flying competition, when Hassan faces a tragic incident, Amir betrays his beloved friend by turning his back on him. This act of betrayal haunts him for many years.

Years later, Amir learns that Hassan and his wife have been killed by the Taliban. In response, he returns to Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, to find Hassan's son, who is in trouble and living in slavery, and to save him.
